Chester Xu

Chester began as a UCS student in 2003. He has served as a guide and translator for UCS since 2005.

Chester has trained since childhood on the Gu Zhen, a traditional Chinese instrument traditionally played by women. As one of the few boys who plays the instrument, and plays it with incredible skill, Chester was able to be accepted to a music college in Wuhan when he graduated from high school this May.

Chester's favorite class at UCS was music with Suzie. He accompanied the choir, astonishing students and teachers by figuring out American songs they studied in class on the piano after hearing them only once or twice. Chester also studied in all Honors level classes where he was admired by his classmates for his quiet, respectful manner during class discussions and thoughtful essays. He worked as an assistant to Rachel, and often stayed late after school to clean classrooms and spend time with teachers talking and translating the lyrics of American songs.

The son of a city bus driver and an electronics store worker, Chester attended UCS on full scholarship. Teachers were very moved and extremely proud to join his family and friends in sending him off to university in Wuhan with a banquet this August. Chester opened the banquet by giving a speech in English where he thanked his foreign teachers for helping him to improve his English, and promised to return to UCS to help the teachers and continue his studies.
